SCAPA FLOW ATTACKED!
On New Year’s Day 1941, several air units of the
Kriegsmarine attacked Britain’s main naval base at Scapa Flow. The British, who
were no doubt still inebriated from a night of drunken revelry, were taken
completely by surprise. Our brave boys in blue crippled the aircraft carrier
HMS Furious. She was subjected to repeated bomb hits while her entire
complement of aircraft was on her deck! Additional hits were scored on the
battleship HMS Repulse and on the harbor facilities. The strike was carried out
so flawlessly that not a single plane was damaged during the attack. The
dedication and skill of these airmen of the Kriegsmarine is a testament to
German patriotism and efficiency.
Last month our U-Boot-Waffe sunk over 500,000 gross
registered tons of British merchant shipping. Our correspondent recently met with Admiral Karl Dönitz,
BdU, at his headquarters at Kiel to discuss the U-boat campaign against Britain. Admiral Dönitz
described the state of the campaign in the Atlantic in great detail, “Since the
beginning of the war, the Kriegsmarine has sunk over 4,500,000 g.r.t. of Allied
merchant shipping. Without doubt the key to our success in the Atlantic has
been the valiant and resourceful men of the U-Boot-Waffe. They have fought with great skill
and honor. They are committed to defeating Britain and to bringing total
victory to the Reich.”
BdU reports that applications to join the U-Boot-Waffe
are at record levels. When asked what young men could do to improve their
chances of being selected, Dönitz stated, “We look for many things in
candidates …mechanical or mathematical aptitude, fighting spirit; but most of
all the ability to get along well with others. U-boats are hardly luxurious,
and can be rather cramped. Every member of the crew must implicitly trust his
shipmate. It is this close sense of comradeship that makes the U-Boot-Waffe so
successful.”
